Moi University, with the support of the NORPART program, successfully conducted a high-impact seminar on outcome-based education (OBE) to mentor and sensitize academic staff in the School of Engineering.
The event, held on January 27, 2025, at Moi University’s Annex Campus, underscored the university’s commitment to aligning engineering programs with global accreditation standards under the Washington Accord (WA).
Washington Accord and Kenya’s Path to International Recognition
The Washington Accord (WA) is a multinational agreement recognizing the equivalence of accredited engineering degree programs across signatory countries.
In pursuit of global accreditation, the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has initiated Kenya’s membership process in the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).
Among the pioneering programs undergoing this accreditation process is Moi University’s B.Eng. (Chemical & Process Engineering), alongside four other degree programs.
Distinguished Speakers and Key Insights
The seminar featured renowned scholars and industry experts, including:
- Prof. Tom Mboya (Director, International Programs) delivered a keynote address emphasizing curriculum internationalization and modern pedagogical strategies.
- Prof. Michael Korir (Director, Quality Assurance, Compliance & Performance Contracting) discussed the importance of maintaining academic excellence.
- Prof. Eng. Augustine Makokha (Dean, School of Engineering) highlighted strategies for curriculum alignment with global standards.
- Prof. Sam Adaramola (Norwegian University of Life Sciences, NMBU) provided insights on outcome-based learning from Nordic educational systems.
- Prof. Eng. Emmanuel Kipkorir & Prof. Eng. Simiyu Sitati, trained curriculum evaluators under the Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC), shared expert perspectives on accreditation and evaluation processes.
Strategic Plans for Global Competitiveness
Moi University’s School of Engineering is dedicated to aligning all its programs with international accreditation standards.
As part of this initiative, the institution plans to establish an Industry Advisory Panel (IAP), fostering closer collaboration between lecturers, students, and industry professionals to enhance practical learning and professional exposure.
Conclusion
The Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Seminar marks a significant step toward advancing engineering education at Moi University.
By adopting internationally recognized accreditation frameworks and modern pedagogical approaches, the university is set to produce globally competitive engineering graduates.
As the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) moves toward full Washington Accord membership, Moi University remains at the forefront of shaping the future of engineering education in Kenya.
