The College of Human Resource and Development (COHRED) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) continues to solidify its reputation as a premier institution for developing future human resource professionals.
On Thursday, February 6, 2025, JKUAT marked a significant milestone with the official launch of the JKUAT Human Resource Students Association (JKHRSA), an initiative designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice.
Empowering HR Students Through Professional Networks
The establishment of JKHRSA provides students with an essential platform to engage directly with human resource practitioners and certification bodies.
Through this association, students can access mentorship programs, professional training, and networking opportunities that enhance their career readiness.
The launch event featured CHRP. Margaret Nguu, the Acting CEO of the Human Resource Management Professionals Examination Board (HRMPEB), as the Chief Guest.
In her keynote address, she expressed a strong commitment to collaborating with JKUAT, recognizing the institution as a registered Certified Human Resource Professionals (CHRP) Center.
She emphasized the importance of professional certification in HR, encouraging students to take advantage of available opportunities to align their skills with industry standards.
“As the organization responsible for developing the Human Resource (HR) curriculum and certifying HR professionals, I urge students to actively pursue certification.
This step will bridge the skills gap by ensuring that academic training meets industry expectations,” stated CHRP. Nguu.
Certification as a Gateway to Global Opportunities
CHRP. Nguu further highlighted the global recognition that comes with HR certification, noting that professionals who obtain these credentials enhance their marketability and competitiveness in the global job market.
She encouraged students to engage with HRMPEB events to gain valuable insights and build connections with industry leaders.
Eunice Wanjiru, the President of JKHRSA, expressed enthusiasm about the association’s potential to foster a strong professional community among HR students.
She emphasized the importance of mentorship, professional development, and continuous learning, envisioning a future where JKUAT HR students emerge as industry leaders.
Wanjiru also acknowledged the pivotal role played by Dr. Rebeccah Maina, the association’s patron, and the class of 2024 alumni in laying the foundation for this initiative.
Strategic Partnerships for Career Advancement
During the launch, Dr. Karanja Kabare, representing the Principal of COHRED, Prof. Florence Mwaura, welcomed attendees and commended the formation of JKHRSA as a transformative step for the college.
As a specialist in human resource management, Dr. Kabare underscored the significance of collaboration between JKUAT and key HR institutions such as HRMPEB and the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM).
“We anticipate fruitful partnerships with HRMPEB and IHRM to facilitate the certification process for our students and staff. These collaborations will ensure that our graduates are fully equipped with the professional credentials required in the industry,” stated Dr. Kabare.
He further emphasized the benefits of industry-academic linkages, highlighting how exposure to real-world HR practices will prepare students to seamlessly transition into the workforce.
By integrating practical training into the curriculum, JKUAT aims to produce highly competent HR professionals who can navigate the evolving demands of the corporate sector.
Industry Insights: The Value of Soft Skills and Personal Branding
The event also featured insights from industry leaders representing organizations such as IHRM, Influential, Bamburi Cement, and JCVs.
These professionals shared their expertise on crucial aspects of career growth, emphasizing the importance of continuous skill development beyond technical HR competencies.
Key discussion points included:
- Soft Skills Development: Effective communication, emotional intelligence, and leadership were highlighted as essential skills that set professionals apart in the competitive job market.

By fostering a culture of professionalism, continuous learning, and industry engagement, the university is shaping the next generation of HR leaders who will drive organizational success in Kenya and beyond.
As JKUAT continues to build strategic partnerships and enhance its academic offerings, the university reaffirms its dedication to producing well-rounded, industry-ready HR professionals.
