Karatina University is proud to announce the appointment of Prof. Franklin Wabwoba as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research, and Student Affairs), effective 1st January 2025.

Prof. Wabwoba, a distinguished professor of information technology, brings with him a wealth of experience, having earned a PhD in information technology from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

His expertise in academia, research, and leadership will be instrumental in driving the university’s strategic goals forward.

A Proven Leader with Extensive Experience

Before joining Karatina University, Prof. Wabwoba served as the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) at Kibabii University.

During his tenure at Kibabii, he demonstrated exceptional leadership in shaping academic policies, fostering student engagement, and improving the overall student experience.

Prof. Wabwoba’s visionary approach to academic leadership saw the development of new programs and the enhancement of existing curricula, aligning them with both national and international standards.

In addition to his role as acting DVC, Prof. Wabwoba has held several pivotal leadership positions, including:

  1. Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET): As TVET Director, Prof. Wabwoba played a crucial role in enhancing vocational training programs, ensuring they met the evolving demands of the job market. His leadership in this capacity contributed to the institution’s ability to prepare graduates who are both industry-ready and skilled.

  2. Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics: Prof. Wabwoba’s tenure as Dean saw significant growth in the School of Computing and Informatics, where he oversaw the development of new courses and fostered a culture of research and innovation. His efforts led to the expansion of the department, further solidifying the university’s position as a leader in technology-based education.

  3. Chairman of the Department of Computer Science: As the Chairman of the Department of Computer Science, Prof. Wabwoba demonstrated his exceptional administrative and academic leadership, facilitating the department’s growth and ensuring it produced graduates who are highly sought after in the tech industry.

A Scholar and Researcher of International Standing

Prof. Wabwoba is an accomplished researcher with a robust track record of published work in peer-reviewed journals.

He has presented his research at numerous national and international conferences, establishing himself as a respected scholar in the field of information technology.

His research contributions extend beyond academics, as he has successfully attracted significant funding for various research projects. One of his most notable achievements includes securing a competitive infrastructure grant worth KES 64.6 million from the National Research Fund in 2019.

This funding enabled the development of advanced research infrastructure, further propelling academic and research activities in his previous institutions.

Prof. Wabwoba has mentored and supervised numerous postgraduate and undergraduate students, both locally and internationally.
