The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) has received its second Coaster vehicle as part of the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project implementation.

This acquisition is among four vehicles planned under the HEET Project, aimed at enhancing project operations, including construction site monitoring and logistical support.

During a brief handover ceremony at MUHAS, Dr. Nathanael Sirili, the Deputy HEET Project Coordinator, highlighted the significant cost reduction achieved through the procurement process managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The initial budget for the first two vehicles was TZS 450 million each; however, through strategic procurement, the cost was reduced to TZS 312 million per vehicle, saving approximately TZS 138 million.

Dr. Sirili emphasized that the new vehicle will facilitate the transportation of staff and students to practical training sessions, thereby strengthening the integration of health and education sectors.

HEET Project Coordinator at MUHAS, Prof. Erasto Mbugi, commended the project implementation team for their efficiency in ensuring timely execution.

He also expressed gratitude to the university’s vice chancellor for expediting the necessary approvals, which contributed to the successful procurement of the second vehicle.

“This vehicle will serve the university’s needs comprehensively. While primarily supporting HEET Project activities, it remains university property and will be managed according to MUHAS’s operational guidelines,” Prof. Mbugi stated.

Speaking at the event, MUHAS Vice Chancellor, Prof. Appolinary Kamuhabwa, lauded the project team’s dedication in securing the second vehicle and achieving cost savings.

“The key highlight here is that we have acquired the second vehicle while saving substantial funds. These savings will now enable us to procure two additional vehicles, further bolstering project implementation and institutional operations,” Prof. Kamuhabwa remarked.

Furthermore, Prof. Kamuhabwa urged project implementers to expedite the acquisition of the remaining two vehicles while ensuring strict adherence to maintenance protocols.

He emphasized that proper management of these vehicles is crucial for the success of the HEET Project, which aims to drive economic transformation in Tanzania’s higher education sector.
