Mzumbe University, through the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) under the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project, has organized a workshop on climate change.
The workshop took place at the university’s main campus in Morogoro on February 12, 2025, aiming to enhance public awareness of climate change impacts, its causes, and sustainable solutions.
Participants in this workshop were first-year undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental management.
They had the opportunity to engage in discussions on various strategies to address environmental challenges for present and future development.
During the opening session, Dr. Editha Ndunguru, the HEET Project Coordinator for Environmental Affairs, emphasized the significance of climate education in mitigating its effects and adopting appropriate response measures. “Climate change is a real challenge that affects all of us.
Through education and research, we can contribute to sustainable solutions for the future of our environment. I encourage students to take on the role of environmental ambassadors by promoting efforts to protect our ecosystem,” said Dr. Ndunguru.

Mr. Stephen Mwakabonga, one of the facilitators, elaborated on the meaning of climate change, its sources, and its societal and economic implications. He highlighted that human activities such as deforestation, fossil fuel consumption, and environmental pollution significantly contribute to climate disruptions and extreme weather conditions.
Engineer Grace Msangi, another workshop facilitator, explained various solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change. She stressed the importance of eco-friendly technologies, sustainable agricultural practices, and the implementation of policies that align with environmental conservation efforts.
Additionally, Mr. Emmanuely Zephaline discussed the application of digital mapping systems and satellite imagery in environmental management.
His presentation showcased how modern technology can be leveraged to monitor and mitigate climate change impacts effectively.
The workshop left a lasting impact on its participants, with many pledging to apply the knowledge gained in contributing to the fight against climate change through sustainable initiatives.
Mzumbe University remains committed to empowering students with the necessary skills and knowledge to address environmental challenges and promote a greener future.
