In a bold move to revolutionize food security and stimulate economic growth in Kenya’s Lower Eastern region, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) has entered into a transformative five-year strategic partnership with the Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC).

This collaboration seeks to enhance the grain value chain by leveraging EAGC’s extensive expertise in facilitating efficient and inclusive grain trade, coupled with SEKU’s cutting-edge research and academic excellence in agriculture and food science.

Driving Innovation in the Grain Sector

Recognizing the pivotal role of a resilient and sustainable grain sector in regional development, this partnership is set to address some of the most pressing challenges faced by farmers and stakeholders within the industry.

Through advanced research initiatives, SEKU and EAGC will focus on developing and implementing innovative technologies aimed at:

  • Minimizing post-harvest losses
  • Improving grain storage and handling practices
  • Unlocking new opportunities for value addition

By integrating modern agricultural practices and scientific advancements, the collaboration aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of grain production, thereby boosting food security and economic resilience in the region.

Policy Advocacy for a Thriving Agricultural Economy

Beyond research and innovation, SEKU and EAGC will actively engage in policy advocacy to drive reforms that promote sustainable agricultural practices, fair trade, and overall food security enhancement. Leveraging the combined expertise of both institutions, the partnership will push for:

  • Policy reforms that create an enabling environment for grain trade
  • Implementation of sustainable agricultural methodologies
  • Enhanced market access for smallholder farmers

Gerald Masila, Executive Director of EAGC, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to transform the grain sector.

Together, we will unlock the full potential of agribusiness in this region, fostering sustainability, innovation, and economic prosperity while empowering local communities and improving livelihoods.”

Empowering Local Farmers and Enhancing Environmental Sustainability

A key focus of the collaboration is the empowerment of farmers and key stakeholders within the grain value chain. SEKU and EAGC will promote sustainable agricultural practices designed to:

  • Enhance soil health
  • Conserve water resources
  • Minimize environmental impact

By equipping farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge, the initiative aims to boost productivity and ensure long-term sustainability in food production.

Bridging Academia and Industry for Future Agricultural Leaders

In an effort to bridge the gap between academia and industry, SEKU students will gain practical exposure through internships and industrial attachments within EAGC member organizations.

This hands-on experience will provide students with valuable insights into the grain trade industry, equipping them with practical skills essential for success in the agricultural sector.

Prof. Eng. Douglas Shitanda, Vice-Chancellor of SEKU, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration: “This partnership provides a unique platform for SEKU to translate cutting-edge research into tangible solutions that address critical challenges in the agricultural sector.

By working together with EAGC, we can contribute significantly to the sustainable socio-economic development of East Africa.”
