The world of academia demands rigorous research and high-quality publications, particularly in development studies. To bridge the gap between research and publication, Mzumbe University, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) are collaborating with the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam (ISS-EUR) to organize a five-day workshop from April 28 to May 2, 2025.
This event aims to support PhD students, recent graduates, and early-career researchers in Tanzania to enhance their academic writing skills and improve their chances of publishing in high-impact international journals.
The Objective of the Writeshop
The workshop is meticulously designed to equip participants with vital skills in:
- Understanding contemporary debates in development and agrarian studies.
- Mastering conceptualization and framing of research papers.
- Navigating the journal selection and submission process.
- Effectively responding to peer review feedback.
- Engaging with global academic knowledge structures and politics.
Through hands-on mentoring and peer-reviewed discussions, participants will gain a deep understanding of the global knowledge ecosystem, improving their publication potential.
Target Participants and Eligibility
The Writeshop targets PhD students, recent PhD graduates (within five years), and young researchers from Tanzanian universities. Special consideration will be given to graduate assistants with an MA degree from one of the participating institutions.

The workshop will focus on a variety of development studies and agrarian studies topics, including:
- Agrarian Studies: Land governance, migrant labor, rural livelihoods, and conservation.
- Globalization and Development: Trade policies, economic growth, FDI, and rural development initiatives.
- Social Structures in Knowledge Production: Knowledge politics, access to publication networks, and equity in academia.
