A Milestone Moment for First-Year Families
Excitement and anticipation filled the air as parents and guardians arrived at the University of Cape Town (UCT) for the highly anticipated Parent Orientation 2025.
Held at the iconic Sarah Baartman Hall on 1 February, the event welcomed more than 4,000 first-year students and their families, marking the beginning of a transformative academic journey.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela set the tone for the occasion, emphasizing the shared responsibility of parents, students, and faculty in ensuring student success.
“Getting in is one thing, but getting through is another,” he noted. “Our children are benefiting from the work done by those before us. I invite you to be an active participant, a partner, and to be a UCT parent.”
The Role of Parents in Academic Success
Parent orientation at UCT is designed to equip families with the knowledge and resources they need to support their children’s transition into university life.
The event provided an in-depth overview of UCT’s academic programs, student support services, and campus culture.
Speakers included senior faculty members, student representatives, and academic advisors who highlighted key expectations and opportunities available to first-year students.
Parents were encouraged to engage proactively in their children’s university experience, from fostering open communication to staying informed about academic progress.
The Vice-Chancellor’s message underscored the importance of a strong support system at home to complement the institution’s academic guidance.
Academic and Well-being Support
To ensure a smooth transition, UCT offers a range of support structures tailored to first-year students. The orientation covered crucial aspects such as:
- Academic advising and mentorship: guidance on course selection, workload management, and future career paths.
- Mental health and wellness resources: counseling services, student wellness programs, and peer support networks.
- Financial aid and funding: information on scholarships, bursaries, and financial planning tools.
“These young minds are stepping into a new world filled with challenges and opportunities,” said Dr. Zanele Ngcobo, Director of Student Support Services.
“It is essential that they know they are not alone. UCT is committed to ensuring they thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”
Creating a Sense of Belonging
Beyond academics, parent orientation also emphasized UCT’s vibrant student life, cultural diversity, and inclusive campus environment.
Parents toured the university’s state-of-the-art facilities, including lecture halls, libraries, and student residences. The event also featured a panel discussion with current UCT students who shared their personal experiences and insights into navigating university life successfully.
For many parents, the event provided reassurance and a sense of belonging within the UCT community. “It’s comforting to know that UCT prioritizes student well-being as much as academic excellence,” remarked one parent. “We now feel more prepared to support our child on this journey.”
A Collaborative Future
As the event concluded, families left with a deeper understanding of what lies ahead and a renewed sense of partnership with the university.
UCT remains committed to fostering a collaborative relationship between parents, students, and faculty to ensure every student reaches their full potential.
“Your children are stepping into a world-class institution that will shape their future,” Professor Moshabela affirmed. “Together, let’s create an environment where they can grow, excel, and make meaningful contributions to society.”
Parent orientation 2025 was not just an event—it was the first step in a journey of academic excellence, resilience, and success at UCT.
