The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) continues to set a benchmark in women empowerment through its groundbreaking Entrepreneurship and Business Management Programme.

On February 13, 2025, the university celebrated the graduation of 26 women entrepreneurs from the second batch of this transformative initiative, reinforcing its commitment to fostering business growth and equipping women with essential skills.

A Testament to Women Empowerment and Business Growth

Held in Dar es Salaam, the graduation ceremony underscored the program’s success in Bridging the gender gap in entrepreneurship.

The six-month initiative is designed to provide women entrepreneurs with a solid foundation in business acumen, leadership, and financial management.

The event not only celebrated the achievements of the graduates but also emphasized the university’s role in ensuring long-term sustainability and inclusivity in business education.

A Call for Digital Expansion

The Guest of Honor, UDSM Chief Corporate Counsel and Secretary to Council, Prof. Saudin Mwakaje, lauded the program’s impact and advocated for its digital expansion to reach a broader audience.

“Going digital will help us reach more aspiring women entrepreneurs and enhance the impact of this initiative. The university is committed to ensuring the continuation of the project, with emphasis on mentorship in the training as a key pillar in business growth,” stated Prof. Mwakaje.

His sentiments were echoed by Prof. Goodluck Urassa of the University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS), who highlighted the program’s transformative impact on women entrepreneurs, their businesses, and household financial stability.

“This initiative is essential in elevating household income and ensuring long-term financial security,” he affirmed.

Empowering Women Through Mentorship and Skill Development

Prof. Neema Mori, Director of Public Services and coordinator of the program, praised the dedication and resilience of the graduates. She extended her gratitude to facilitators, mentors, coordinators, and alumni from the first batch who played a significant role in shaping the program.

“This is only the beginning of greater things ahead,” she remarked, stressing the university’s dedication to expanding the program’s reach and impact.

The curriculum included vital courses such as:

  • Leadership and Entrepreneurial Strategy
  • Human Resources and Organisational Management
  • Marketing and Value Chain Management
  • Finance for Growth
  • Managing the Business Environment

Dr. Robert Suphian, Head of the Marketing Department at UDBS, represented the UDBS Dean and emphasized the university’s dedication to community service.

He reiterated that the program is run as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, fostering business networks that can benefit the graduates and the larger business community.

“The program has created invaluable connections that will help these entrepreneurs grow beyond their expectations,” Dr. Suphian noted.

Real-Life Transformations: Voices from the Graduates

A particularly inspiring testimony came from graduate Madam Editha Kweka, who detailed how the training revolutionized her business approach. She specifically highlighted the invaluable knowledge gained in labor laws and human resource management.

“Since implementing these skills, I have seen a remarkable difference in my business. I do not just fire my staff anymore; we follow procedures. Moreover, I actively involve my sons in the enterprise to groom them as successors,” she shared.
