The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), in collaboration with Sida, has opened applications for its prestigious PhD sponsorship under the iGRID project.
This opportunity is available for qualified Tanzanian candidates specializing in computer and IT systems engineering, with a focus on smart grid development and implementation.
About the iGRID Project
The iGRID Phase II sub-programme aims to enhance human technical and scientific capacity in Tanzania, facilitating the automation of monitoring, evaluation, analysis, control, and management of electrical power systems. The project’s primary objective is to optimize operational costs and improve power delivery efficiency.
The initiative embraces a multidisciplinary approach, integrating security, communication, IoT applications, big data processing, machine-to-machine interfaces, and smart grid control.
Eligibility Criteria
Interested applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must have secured or be eligible for admission into a PhD in Computer and IT Systems Engineering at UDSM.
- Must be a Tanzanian citizen.
- Must demonstrate research capability and commitment, particularly during MSc studies.
- Must provide proof of employer approval for full-time PhD study.
- Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Must be willing to collaborate in research groups while tackling individual research challenges.
Research Focus
Selected candidates will undertake research in various aspects of smart grid development. Each student will choose a specific academic area within the field while working collectively on a defined research challenge.
Sponsorship Duration and Benefits
The sponsorship covers a period of four (4) years, starting from the March intake of the 2024/25 academic year. It includes:
- Full tuition fees, book allowance, and a monthly stipend.
- Research and fieldwork funding.
- Financial support for presenting research papers at international conferences.

- Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- Certified copies of bachelor’s and master’s degree certificates and transcripts.
- A-Level academic certificates.
- A three-to-four-page research abstract focusing on smart grid areas.
- A commitment letter to complete the program within the stipulated time.
- Employer’s consent letter for study leave.
- Two recommendation letters from academic/professional referees with contact details.
- Admission letter or proof of application to the PhD program.
