The University of Nairobi (UoN) made history by hosting the inaugural Nairobi Environmental Diplomacy Symposium on February 6, 2025, at the Chandaria Auditorium.

This landmark event, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs, convened government officials, ambassadors, environmental experts, and academia to deliberate on pressing global environmental challenges and diplomatic solutions.

A Historic Milestone in Environmental Diplomacy

The symposium was graced by Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, who emphasized the event’s significance in raising awareness of global environmental diplomacy.

He highlighted key deliverables and projected outcomes of the two-day symposium, citing climate change, rapid urban development, and technological advancements as critical challenges requiring immediate attention.

Nairobi’s strategic role as the home of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Habitat was underscored by Hon. Mudavadi, who called for concerted efforts among stakeholders to devise effective strategies for environmental conservation.

Unveiling 60 Years of Kenya’s Environmental Diplomacy

In a landmark moment, Hon. Mudavadi launched the legacy publication Celebrating 60 Years of Kenya’s Environmental Diplomacy, which chronicles the nation’s longstanding commitment to global environmental governance.

The launch symbolized Kenya’s continuous dedication to leading environmental initiatives on the international stage.

Global Perspectives on Climate Action

Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, Chancellor of the University of Nairobi and CEO of the Global Centre on Adaptation, delivered a powerful video address, stressing the urgency of global unity against the climate crisis.

He highlighted that the intersection of artificial intelligence, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability presents the greatest opportunity for transformative change.

“We are facing a climate crisis, a debt crisis, and global instability. Yet, within this chaos lies the most significant economic opportunity of our time.

In a united world, AI and innovation propel us forward. In a divided world, they dismantle societal structures,” he asserted.

Kenya’s Leadership in Climate Action

Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, reaffirmed Kenya’s leadership in climate action, detailing the country’s contributions to international environmental agreements.

He emphasized that the symposium serves as a platform to strengthen partnerships among policymakers, academia, and industry players in addressing climate change and environmental degradation.

UoN’s Commitment to Sustainability

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hutchinson, represented by Prof. Leonida Kerubo, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, expressed UoN’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation. She invoked the words of Nobel Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai:

“Nature is kind but can be unforgiving if abused. We must not be complicit in its destruction.”

Prof. Hutchinson highlighted UoN’s dedication to achieving Kenya’s nationally determined contributions and emission reduction targets, aligning with multilateral environmental agreements such as the Paris Agreement. She also showcased key sustainability initiatives at UoN, including:

  • The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies
  • The Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation
  • The Solar Academy
  • The Proposed Decarbonisation Project at the Faculty of Built Environment and Design

These initiatives reflect UoN’s strategic vision to integrate environmentalism into academic research, policy formulation, and sustainable development.

A Call for Global Cooperation

Dr. Korir Sing’oei, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, emphasized the importance of combating climate denial and fostering international collaborations to achieve sustainable development.

A thought-provoking panel discussion followed, tackling crucial environmental issues such as land degradation and pollution. Experts shared insights and actionable strategies to address these challenges, reinforcing Kenya’s pivotal role in global environmental diplomacy.

Shaping the Future of Environmental Diplomacy

The inaugural Nairobi Environmental Diplomacy Symposium marked a crucial step toward setting a global environmental agenda.

By fostering dialogue, collaboration, and strategic planning, the event laid the groundwork for impactful policies and solutions that will shape the future of environmental diplomacy.
