The University of Nairobi (UoN) is reinforcing its commitment to academic excellence through an intensive PhD supervision training for faculty members.
From February 4 to 6, 2025, staff from the faculties of health sciences and law participated in a transformative workshop at the University Towers, designed to elevate doctoral supervision practices.
This marks the second in a series of faculty-driven PhD supervision enhancement programs organized by the university with support from the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA).
Empowering Supervisors for Research Excellence
The workshop assembled faculty members, experienced supervisors, and academic leaders to deliberate on best practices in PhD supervision, mentorship, and maintaining research excellence.
Participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions aimed at strengthening doctoral training and fostering academic integrity.
Key Workshop Highlights
1. Supervision Frameworks & Best Practices
Participants explored effective PhD supervision models, recruitment strategies, supervision styles, and formal supervision agreements. The discussions emphasized structured mentorship, clear communication, and accountability to enhance research outcomes.
2. Addressing Challenges in PhD Supervision
The workshop tackled common hurdles faced in doctoral supervision, such as managing expectations, addressing unfair supervisory practices, and handling the emotional aspects of the mentor-mentee relationship.
Best practices for resolving conflicts and fostering a supportive research environment were also explored.
3. Scientific Integrity & Quality Assurance
Academic integrity remains a cornerstone of doctoral research. Discussions focused on upholding research ethics, preventing misconduct, and fostering a culture of academic honesty.
Faculty members were equipped with tools to ensure high-quality research output that meets global standards.
4. Networking & Collaboration
Participants had the opportunity to exchange insights, discuss institutional challenges, and develop strategies for strengthening PhD training. This segment emphasized the importance of cross-disciplinary collaborations in fostering a thriving academic community.
5. Mentorship & Career Development
Beyond academic guidance, PhD supervision also entails career mentorship. The workshop underscored the role of supervisors in preparing PhD candidates for leadership roles in academia, research, and industry.
Faculty members were encouraged to cultivate an environment that nurtures critical thinking, innovation, and professional growth.
Transforming Doctoral Training at UoN
Through this initiative, the University of Nairobi continues to reinforce its position as a center of academic excellence in Africa.
By investing in PhD supervision training, UoN is not only improving research quality but also preparing future scholars and thought leaders to drive impactful change in their respective fields.
The success of this workshop underscores the university’s dedication to advancing knowledge and ensuring that PhD candidates receive the highest standards of supervision.
As UoN continues to collaborate with CARTA and other partners, faculty members can look forward to more capacity-building initiatives aimed at shaping the next generation of African researchers.
